Are these in your fruit basket yet?

Are these in your fruit basket yet?
We all know that fruits are good for health. Fruits provide vitamins, minerals and energy. Fruits have to be a part of your daily diet. But do you know what fruits are absolute must-haves in your fruit basket? Experts have listed the following five as the ‘best’ in terms of health benefits.
http://lifestyle.in.msn.com/health/article.aspx?cp-documentid=1587645

Guava: (Amrud in Hindi. Peru in Marathi): This is the uncrowned king of the fruit basket. We are lucky that being a tropical fruit, guavas are available almost throughout the year in our country. A guava tree is one of the most common fruit tress growing in many a backyard. Even in a concrete jungle like Mumbai, one frequently comes across guava trees. Why is guava the star? Recent reports suggest that guavas are packed with anti-oxidant properties and are abundant in Vitamin C. In fact it is said that it beats other fruits hollow when it comes to Vitamin C. Guavas are also the richest in fibre and have age and inflammation fighting properties. Not surprising then that this fruit is the top chartbuster here!

Lychee: Lychees are beautiful to look at, and taste great too. But did you know that just three lychees can meet a third of your Vitamin C requirement of the day? 100 gms of fresh lychees gives you 72 mg of Vitamin C. Other good points of lychees include copper, potassium and riboflavin. Avoid lychee juices and stick to the whole fruit.

Papaya: Another one from the wonder fruits stable. Papayas are wonderful for your skin as they help you fight wrinkles. Vitamin C, folate and potassium are present in papayas. Papayas contain papain, a natural digestive aid, which helps to cleanses the digestive track. Other nutrients include Vitamin A, E and carotenoids and lycopene. In comparison to an orange papaya has 13 times more Vitamin C and 50 times more potassium and four times more Vitamin E than oranges and apples. All this at a lower calorie count.

Banana: Easy to afford and easily available, bananas are a universal favourite. Quick to digest, bananas come with a host of vitamins, A, B, C and also calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and zinc. Experts say that the fiber in a banana is good for your heart. People suffering from acidity are often asked to consume bananas, as they are said to protect from stomach ulcers. Raw bananas are also used in Indian cooking and are high in iron content.

Pomegranate: Red wine and green tea are said to be high in anti-oxidants. But did you know that the content of anti-oxidants in pomegranates are almost three times higher! So next time say ‘cheers’ with pomegranate juice. Also indulging in this juice frequently is extremely beneficial for your heart and it cuts down the risk of artery clogging. Additionally they contain Vitamin B, C, calcium and phosphorous. It also contains a powerful agent that helps fight against prostrate cancer. It is also said to be effective against anaemia, intestinal parasite irritation, piles, asthma, diarrhoea, morning sickness and poor appetite.

Best Joke - MBA Vs BCOM

MBA Vs B Com Student

This particular joke won an award for the best joke in a competition organized in Britain and this joke was sent by an Indian......

A MBA and a BCom go on a camping trip, set up their tent, and fell asleep.

Some hours later, the BCom wakes his MBA friend. “Look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

The MBA replies, "I see millions of stars."

B Com says: "What does that tell you?"

The MBA ponders for a minute.

Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.

Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo.

Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three.

Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant.

Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

MBA says: What does it tell you?"

The B Com is silent for a moment, and then speaks.

"Practically...Someone has stolen our tent".

Washerman and the foolish Donkey - A corporate lesson

Have you heard the story of “The Washer man and the Foolish Donkey”?

To refresh your memory, and for the benefit of those who have not grown up listening to this moral story, it goes like this…

There was once a washer man who had a donkey and a dog. One night when the whole world was sleeping, a thief broke into the house, the washer man was fast asleep but the donkey and the dog were awake. The dog decided not to bark since the master did not take good care of him and wanted to teach him a lesson. The donkey got worried and said to the dog that if he doesn't bark, the donkey will have to do something himself. The dog did not change his mind and the donkey started braying loudly. Hearing the donkey bray, the thief ran away, the master woke up and started beating the donkey for braying in the middle of the night for no reason.

Moral of the story “One must not engage in duties other than his own"

Now take a new look at the same story…

The washer man (J) was a well educated man from a premier management institute. He had the fundas of looking at the bigger picture and thinking out of the box. He was convinced that there must be some reason for the donkey to bray in the night. He walked outside a little and did some fact finding, applied a bottom up approach, figured out from the ground realities that there was a thief who broke in and the donkey only wanted to alert him about it. Looking at the donkey's extra initiative and going beyond the call of the duty, he rewarded him with lot of hay and other perks and became his favorite pet. The dog's life didn't change much, except that now the donkey was more motivated in doing the dogs duties as well. In the annual appraisal the dog managed a “meets requirement" ... Soon the dog realized that the donkey is taking care of his duties and he can enjoy his life sleeping and lazing (boozing) around. The donkey was rated as “star performer". The donkey had to live up to his already high performance standards. Soon he was over burdened with work and always under pressure and now is looking for a job rotation…

All characters in the story are not at all imaginary. Any resemblance to person living or dying of work nearby you is purely intentional.

Credit card companies - Big time Cheaters

I was shocked to see a letter from Centurion bank that they have rejected my credit card application. The shock was not denial of the credit card (There are so many out there so who cares if you don't have one) but the fact that I had never applied one.

A series of thoughts came to my mind. The first being, how did they get all my documents in the first place for application, who would have forged the signature in my name. I wanted to get into the details of this and called thier so called customer care (ironically where they do not care of the customer). I gave the application number and as I had expected they had all my personal details as required for the credit card application. The call center executive first tried to offer empathy by saying "Sir, you can apply within next 6 months and we will process it for you" (Process it, I said. My foot). I disclosed that I had never applied for a card from Centurion bank and demanded that I wanted to know from where my documents were collected. I was completely irate and hence all the executive told me that Sir it might have happened if you had applied for a credit card from ICICI. That did it! I wanted to talk to their legal department on this and what they have to comment about stealing my personal documents. They said I could reach them by emailing wecare@centurionbop.com.

Then the series of mails started and they are still going on till date. These people are open fraudsters and do not reply or even if they do they just send some vague email stating that we will respond back in 48 hrs.

Having done some research I have come across some information that there exists a RBI cell which listens to grievences of customer and bring them to justice. I wish to excersize them and I'll post them on my blog for helping others who have suffered like me.

Microsoft over Google

http://www.25hoursaday.com/weblog/2008/06/29/TheGOOGMSFTExodusWorkingAtGoogleVsWorkingAtMicrosoft.aspx
The GOOG->MSFT Exodus: Working at Google vs. Working at Microsoft

Recently I’ve been bumping into more and more people who’ve either left Google to come to Microsoft or got offers from both companies and picked Microsoft over Google. I believe this is part of a larger trend especially since I’ve seen lots of people who left the company for “greener pastures” return in the past year (at least 8 people I know personally have rejoined) . However in this blog post I’ll stick to talking about people who’ve chosen Microsoft over Google.
First of all there’s the post by Sergey Solyanik entitled Back to Microsoft where he primarily gripes about the culture and lack of career development at Google, some key excerpts are
Last week I left Google to go back to Microsoft, where I started this Monday (and so not surprisingly, I was too busy to blog about it) … So why did I leave?
There are many things about Google that are not great, and merit improvement. There are plenty of silly politics, underperformance, inefficiencies and ineffectiveness, and things that are plain stupid. I will not write about these things here because they are immaterial. I did not leave because of them. No company has achieved the status of the perfect workplace, and no one ever will.
I left because Microsoft turned out to be the right place for me. … Google software business is divided between producing the "eye candy" - web properties that are designed to amuse and attract people - and the infrastructure required to support them. Some of the web properties are useful (some extremely useful - search), but most of them primarily help people waste time online (blogger, youtube, orkut, etc) … This orientation towards cool, but not necessarilly useful or essential software really affects the way the software engineering is done. Everything is pretty much run by the engineering - PMs and testers are conspicuously absent from the process. While they do exist in theory, there are too few of them to matter.
On one hand, there are beneficial effects - it is easy to ship software quickly…On the other hand, I was using Google software - a lot of it - in the last year, and slick as it is, there's just too much of it that is regularly broken. It seems like every week 10% of all the features are broken in one or the other browser. And it's a different 10% every week - the old bugs are getting fixed, the new ones introduced. This across Blogger, Gmail, Google Docs, Maps, and more … The culture part is very important here - you can spend more time fixing bugs, you can introduce processes to improve things, but it is very, very hard to change the culture. And the culture at Google values "coolness" tremendously, and the quality of service not as much. At least in the places where I worked. … The second reason I left Google was because I realized that I am not excited by the individual contributor role any more, and I don't want to become a manager at Google.

The Google Manager is a very interesting phenomenon. On one hand, they usually have a LOT of people from different businesses reporting to them, and are perennially very busy.
On the other hand, in my year at Google, I could not figure out what was it they were doing. The better manager that I had collected feedback from my peers and gave it to me. There was no other (observable by me) impact on Google. The worse manager that I had did not do even that, so for me as a manager he was a complete no-op. I asked quite a few other engineers from senior to senior staff levels that had spent far more time at Google than I, and they didn't know either. I am not making this up!

Sergey isn’t the only senior engineer I know who has contributed significantly to Google projects and then decided Microsoft was a better fit for him. Danny Thorpe who worked on Google Gears is back at Microsoft for his second stint working on developer technologies related to Windows Live. These aren’t the only folks I’ve seen who’ve decided to make the switch from the big G to the b0rg, these are just the ones who have blogs that I can point at.

Unsurprisingly, the fact that Google isn’t a good place for senior developers is also becoming clearly evident in their interview processes. Take this post from Svetlin Nakov entitled Rejected a Program Manager Position at Microsoft Dublin - My Successful Interview at Microsoft where he concludes

My Experience at Interviews with Microsoft and Google
Few months ago I was interviewed for a software engineer in Google Zurich. If I need to compare Microsoft and Google, I should tell it in short: Google sux! Here are my reasons for this:
1) Google interview were not professional. It was like Olympiad in Informatics. Google asked me only about algorithms and data structures, nothing about software technologies and software engineering. It was obvious that they do not care that I had 12 years software engineering experience. They just ignored this. The only think Google wants to know about their candidates are their algorithms and analytical thinking skills. Nothing about technology, nothing about engineering.

2) Google employ everybody as junior developer, ignoring the existing experience. It is nice to work in Google if it is your first job, really nice, but if you have 12 years of experience with lots of languages, technologies and platforms, at lots of senior positions, you should expect higher position in Google, right?

3) Microsoft have really good interview process. People working in Microsoft are relly very smart and skillful. Their process is far ahead of Google. Their quality of development is far ahead of Google. Their management is ahead of Google and their recruitment is ahead of Google.
Microsoft is Better Place to Work than Google
At my interviews I was asking my interviewers in both Microsoft and Google a lot about the development process, engineering and technologies. I was asking also my colleagues working in these companies. I found for myself that Microsoft is better organized, managed and structured. Microsoft do software development in more professional way than Google. Their engineers are better. Their development process is better. Their products are better. Their technologies are better. Their interviews are better. Google was like a kindergarden - young and not experienced enough people, an office full of fun and entertainment, interviews typical for junior people and lack of traditions in development of high quality software products.
Based on my observations, I have theory that Google’s big problem is that the company hasn’t realized that it isn’t a startup anymore. This disconnect between the company’s status and it’s perception of itself manifests in a number of ways
Startups don’t have a career path for their employees. Does anyone at Facebook know what they want to be in five years besides rich? However once riches are no longer guaranteed and the stock isn’t firing on all cylinders (GOOG is underperforming both the NASDAQ and DOW Jones industrial average this year) then you need to have a better career plan for your employees that goes beyond “free lunches and all the foosball you can handle".
There is no legacy code at a startup. When your code base is young, it isn’t a big deal to have developers checking in new features after an overnight coding fit powered by caffeine and pizza. For the most part, the code base shouldn’t be large enough or interdependent enough for one change to cause issues. However it is practically a law of software development that the older your code gets the more lines of code it accumulates and the more closely coupled your modules become. This means changing things in one part of the code can have adverse effects in another.
As all organizations mature they tend to add PROCESS. These processes exist to insulate the companies from the mistakes that occur after a company gets to a certain size and can no longer trust its employees to always do the right thing. Requiring code reviews, design specifications, black box & whitebox & unit testing, usability studies, threat models, etc are all the kinds of overhead that differentiate a mature software development shop from a “fly by the seat of your pants” startup. However once you’ve been through enough fire drills, some of those processes don’t sound as bad as they once did. This is why senior developers value them while junior developers don’t since the latter haven’t been around the block enough.
There is less politics at a startup. In any activity where humans have to come together collaboratively to achieve a goal, there will always be people with different agendas. The more people you add to the mix, the more agendas you have to contend with. Doing things by consensus is OK when you have to get consensus from two or three people who sit in the same hallway as you. It’s a totally different ball game when you need to gain it from lots of people from across a diverse company working on different projects in different regions of the world who have different perspectives on how to solve your problems. At Google, even hiring an undergraduate candidate has to go through several layers of committees which means hiring managers need to possess some political savvy if they want to get their candidates approved. The founders of Dodgeball quit the Google after their startup was acquired after they realized that they didn’t have the political savvy to get resources allocated to their project.
The fact that Google is having problems retaining employees isn't news, Fortune wrote an article about it just a few months ago. The technology press makes it seem like people are ditching Google for hot startups like FriendFeed and Facebook. However the truth is more nuanced than that. Now that Google is just another big software company, lots of people are comparing it to other big software companies like Microsoft and finding it lacking.

Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 series keyboard review

Computer has been my passion for a long time now. Taken IT as a profession and working for a world’ largest software company only keeps me abreast to my passion. It’s many a times read that you should use ergonomic hardware to ensure you get less HURT while using computers. I cannot agree more to this. So calling all the people who eat, live and sleep on their PC’s. I have seen my friend getting hospitalized as he was a typist by profession and due to extensive typing his joints of the fingers and the wrist were so badly effected as the ligaments in his joints went brittle. His hands were bandaged for almost 20 days, not joking at all.

I wanted to share my thoughts on ergonomic keyboard which I have been using for past couple of years now. I feel it was one of the best accessories for my PC I invested it. Here is what exactly I am talking about, If you’d like to see all its cool features

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=043&active_tab=systemRequirements

They best part of the keyboard is the leather made comfortable wrist support which ensures that your hands get very comfortably placed. Secondly the elevation it has on the upper side gives a perfect angle for your typing and again is a pleasurable feeling for you fingers. The look and the design of the keyboard is very sleek and neat.

With all the good features this keyboard will make you type like a professional as its keypad is split for both your hands. It wasn’t a much hassle for me to get used since I don’t have the habit of typing with 1 or 2 fingers. So do get some online typing lessons for practicing typing full fledged.

All I can say it, this keyboard is a worth an invested if you type extensively for hours on a PC at your home or work place.

Dancing my lifelong aspiration

Dancing is something which is very close to my heart. Every beat makes my feet thump. During my childhood and teens, I aspired to learn classical dance although I do not limit myself to a single dance form. But for some reason or the other and majorly study as a priority this aspiriation of mine always got postponed. I had promised myself one thing then that no matter in when I will certainly fulfill my wish to learn clasical dance form.

After my marriage I relocated to Bangalore and like most may put down their wishes in old treasure chest and ponder about them in thoughts, I refrained from doing so. I overcame the resisting thoughts of ... Whether I'll be able to learn at this age, If I'll be able to find a good teacher.... I will have to may be learn in a batch of young school going girls..... But my aspiration was stronger than these inhibitions. So I started of looking out for a dance school of my convenience and as it is rightly said .. Where there is a will there is a way. I found my way out. I met my dance teacher who runs a Bharatnatyam Dance named as Yuva Bharati Nrityalaya located at Kaggadaspura Main Road, above Bhavini Steel Shop, located near SMART and diagonally opposite to UTI ATM.

So I started of and on day one I was pleasing suprised to meet a like minded lady doctor who also had a long time desire to learn dance. There was no looking back from that day. We grew to a batch of 6 within just 1 month. There is a myth that when you enter teens its very hard or rahter impossible to learn clasical dance, but we proved it wrong. All it requires is a strong will to succeed, perseverence and efforts to make things happen in your way.

I wanted to share this so whoever reads this blog could be inspired to do what they really want to do and should not shy away from thinking negatively like, will I be able to .. What will people say .. etc.

Thus ending the blog and wishing you luck for your endeavors.

Computer keyboards can be dirtier than a toilet

Canberra: Think twice before eating those dropped crumbs off your computer keyboard — you might as well be eating off a toilet seat, according to a new study on the amount of germs on keyboards.

A study by British consumer magazine Which? Computing asked a microbiologist to examine 33 keyboards in a typical London office, a toilet seat and a toilet door handle, for bugs generally found in unhygienic places.

Four keyboards were judged potential health hazards and the microbiologist recommended the removal of one keyboard as it had 150 times the pass limit of bacteria — five times filthier than the swabbed toilet seat.
"Most people don't give much thought to the grime that builds up on their PC, but if you don't clean your computer, you might as well eat your lunch off the toilet," said Sarah Kidner, editor of Which? Computing in a statement.

The study found that eating lunch at desks is the main cause of a bug-infested keyboard. Dropped crumbs and food encourages the growth of millions of bacteria.
Poor personal hygiene, such as not washing hands after going to the toilet, may also add to the dirtiness of keyboards.

But despite the health hazard of a dirty keyboard, a survey of 4,000 people by the magazine found one in 10 people — or 11 per cent — never cleaned their keyboard while another two in 10 never cleaned their mouse.

Almost half — or 46 per cent — cleaned their keyboard less than once a month.
To clear out bugs, the magazine recommends users unplug keyboards, turn them upside down and shake them.

Karnataka – Marriage Registration

It was on the 25th of June, we got our marriage registered and we sighed a breath of relief for getting over with this task. Me and my wife both belong to Maharashtra but I have been residing here in Bangalore for over 3 years now. Having accomplished this task I thought of sharing the experience for all those aspiring to procure their marriage registration certification. For those who are unaware “Marriage registration is made mandatory as per Law in India”
The first thing to note is that you have to find the registration office which maps to your locality. We stay in CV Raman Nagar and the registration office we visited was K R Puram office. So getting started with what all documents are required. Documents need to be photocopies which are submitted with the application.

1. First you need to fill up a form, which can be obtained at the registration office itself. It’s a simple form asking you to fill details like your fullname, fathers name, mothers name, your current residential address, name and details of you witnesses. There are 3 witnesses required.

2. Proof of address for both Bride and Bridegroom. This might be challenging for few people like us who don’t have a permanent residence in Bangalore. So here is the list of acceptable documents
a. Passport mentioning your current address.
b. Driving license
c. Electricity bill.
d. Telephone bill (Landline. We submitted Airtel bill so it is not mandatory that it has to be BSNL)
e. Gas connection proof.
f. Ration Card
g. Voters ID
h. A letter from your company HR.
i. Rent Agreement copy.
j. Bank statement showing your address.

Things to note:
Just the Rent agreement alone will not suffice and is not accepted. You will need to provide atleast 2 of the address proof documents in case you are submitting the Rent Agreement or Letter from your HR stating your current address. In our case we submitted a letter from HR along with Airtel Landline bill.

Another important point is that you would need address proof for both Bride and Bridegroom separately.

All the documents need to be in English, Hindi or Kannada.

3. Date of Birth proof for Bride and Bridegroom. The following documents will be acceptable.
a. Passport
b. Date of Birth Certificate
c. Driving license
d. School / College leaving certificate
e. Voters ID

4. Invitation card in original.
5. 5 Copies of 2B size photo. A 2B size photo means a joint photo of Bride and Bridegroom.

Procedure

Step 1:
Fill the form with details and get it verified with the clerk. There will be 2 copies of the form. Attach the photograph on both the forms and both of you should sign on the photographs. The clerk will cross check all the documents attached and then ask for signature of both Bride and Bridegroom on each and every document submitted. After the verification the clerk will stamp on the form.

Step 2:
Take the stamped form to the Marriage Registrar. He will again verify it and sign it.

Step 3:
Take the form to the operator who would enter the details in the registration database and give 3 copies of the certificate. Please ensure that all your spelling and details are correct and then sign a draft before printing the final certificate.

Step 4:
Take the printouts to the clerk. Paste the remaining 3 photos on the 3 certificates and submit it back to the clerk.

Step 5:
The clerk will acknowledge the receipt and you’ll have to sign in the register.

Step 6:
The clerk will then get the certificate stamped and signed from the Marriage Registrar.

Step 7:
Give a broad smile as the work is completed.

Additional details:
- First and foremost, both the Bride and Bridegroom must be present to complete the whole procedure.
- 3 witnesses signature is required. The witnesses need not be in blood relation (We requested a family who had come for their own work to sign for us). The witnesses just need to sign the form and no documents are required of the witnesses to be submitted.
- The whole procedure costed us 2 hrs of our time and 115 Rs. Official fees for registration.
- You need not hire an agent as it is fairly simple to get the work done. Agents typically approach you and may ask anywhere between 500 – 1500 Rs.
- You will receive 2 original copies of the marriage certificate.

I hope the above details help and in case you have doubts you can also mail me on krantiashish@gmail.com and I’ll be glad to help.

Loose weight with cabbage

The Cabbage Soup Diet Plan

Eat as much cabbage soup as you desire for seven days and you can lose 10 to 15 pounds. The recipe varies slightly, but includes a variety of low-calorie vegetables such as cabbage, onions, and tomatoes, flavored with bouillon, onion soup mix, and tomato juice. Each day of the seven-day program has a specific foods that must be eaten, including potatoes, fruit juice, many vegetables, and on one day, beef.

Day One:

Eat only fruit, all fruit you want except banana.
Drink unsweetened tea, black coffee, cranberry juice, and water.
Eat as much soup as you like.

Day Two:

All you want – fresh, raw, or cooked vegetables of your choice. Stay away from dry beans, peas, and sweet corn. Reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter for dinner. Eat as much soup as you like but no fruit for today.

Day Three:

Combine days one and two, eat as much fruit, vegetables, and soup, as you like but no baked potato.

Day Four:

Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets.

Day Five:

You may have 10 – 20 ounces of broiled / baked chicken / fish (300 – 500 g) and a large tin or up to six fresh tomatoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once today.

Day Six:

Eat chicken / fish and vegetables today. You can even have two or three steaks if you like, with fresh vegetables or salad. NO BAKED POTATO. Eat your soup at least once.

Day Seven:

Eat all you want of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables. Be sure to eat your soup at least once today. No bread, alcohol, or carbonated beverages, not even diet soda.

Cabbage Soup Diet Recipe:

6 large green onions
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 carrots
10 oz Mushrooms
1 bunch celery
½ head cabbage
1 package lipton soup mix
Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, garlic powder, etc.

Directions:

Slice green onions, put in pot and start to sauté with cooking spray.
Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take seeds and membrane out. Cut the green pepper into pieces and put in pot.
Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut them into pieces and put in pot.
Clean carrots cut into pieces put in pot.
Slice mushrooms into thick slices, put in pot.
If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of cayenne pepper (red pepper) now (1/3 teaspoon is quite a bit as the soup will get spicier as it cooks further).
You can use chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. They have all the salt and flavors you will need.
Use 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time (two hours works well).
Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Eat all the soup you want, whenever you want.

Which type of water purifier I should go for

Water Purifiers reviewed

Know about technology:

In general, domestic water purifiers can be divided in following categories.

Ultra Violate (UV)
Ultra Filtration (UF)
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Chemical Dosing based (CD)

UV works on the principle of bombarding the water with UV rays. Initially it was thought that UV kills the micro organisms. But the current thinking is that it only deactivates them, or at least some of them, who can get activated again after a few hours. (it is also possible that this is a sales gimmick by the competitor systems). In any case, UV is OK if you are going to use the purified water immediately, without storing it for long.

UF filters the water through a very fine membrane which removes all bacteria and viruses. Of course it removes all suspended impurities and even some colloidal impurities. (what is a Colloid ? Look up in google). But UF will NOT remove dissolved impurities.

RO is the only system that removes even the dissolved impurities. RO is required if the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) exceeds a certain value. (what is the upper limit ? Look for discussion on that elsewhere in IWP). RO is also suggested if you have reasons to believe that your water may be contaminated with pesticides/ heavy metals/ industrial effluents.

A problem with RO is, it needs a lot of water. It divides the input water in two parts, and forces the dissolved solids out from one part in to other. Thus, the output comprises two streams of water – a “clean” stream with low TDS and cleaned of other impurities too. And a “reject” stream that is even more dirty than the input water. Typically, an input of 3 liters will give 1 liter of clean water and 2 liters of “reject”. Theoretically, the “reject” water can be used for mopping the floor etc. but few have the discipline to do that.

Reduction of TDS changes the taste and pH of water, and it is not good to reduce the TDS too low. Some manufacturers make a hybrid machine that combines RO with either UV or UF. Bulk of the water is processed by RO, to remove dissolved solids; and some is processed by either UF or UV, to kill micro-organisms, but retaining the dissolved solids. The two are combined to restore the dissolved solids to some lower limit. The ratio of mixing the two can be controlled by user.

The simplest and cheapest purifiers are the ones that dose the water with a chemical to kill micro organisms. Most common chemicals used are iodine based or chlorine based. Using an iodine based doser could have some implications for persons suffering from thyroid related problems. Consult your doctor before using such a purifier.

The descending order of cost is RO, UV, UF, Chemicals. RO is typically 10,000 or more, while Chemical based are less than 2000. UV and RO require electricity to operate. UF and chemical based (usually) do not require electricity.

All purifiers in addition to the main processor which is UF/UV or RO, invariably have a coarse pre-filter to remove larger suspended impurities; an activated charcoal processor that removes bad odour and colour – particularly the type caused by decaying vegetable matter in source water; and a post filtering “taste conditioner”. This is what is meant by “4-stage” water purifiers.

For selection, it is not really necessary to get the water tested in a lab. Start with RO. Call the dealer of any RO system for a demo. He will come with a simple portable TDS meter and will measure the TDS at your house. If it is more than about 500 (the limit is debatable), then you need RO. Else, RO is ruled out. That leaves only the micro biological impurities. Go for a UV or UF if your budget is at least 5000/- and a chemical based if the budget is less than 2000/-. As aforesaid, consult a doctor regarding any specific health problems and contra-indications of ALL your family members, before using a chemical based purifier.

DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH
It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases: Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat diseases.

METHOD OF TREATMENT
1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times.
It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life. Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.
This makes sense .. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals ..not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.
A serious note about heart attacks:
· Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting,
· Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.
· You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.
· Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.
· 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.
· Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

Acupuncture Facts

This is very interesting!!
The Organs of your body have their sensory touches at the bottom of your foot, if you massage these points you will find relief from aches and pains as you can see the organs are on right and left foot, the heart is on the left foot. This time, it put organs on the feet as they are. Typically they are shown as points and arrows to show which organ it connects to. It is indeed correct since the nerves connected to these organs terminate here. This is covered in great details in Acupressure studies or textbooks. God created our body so well that he thought of even this. He made us walk so that we will always be pressing these pressure points and thus keeping these organs activated at all times. So, keep walking...

Acupuncture Facts
A FEW COMMONLY USED ACUPUNCTURE POINTSIn ancient times, the number of acupuncture points was established to be the same as the number of days in the year: 365. These points were mapped to 14 major meridian lines, one meridian for each of the 12 inner organs, one meridian along the spine (called the governing vessel), and another along the midline of the abdomen (called the conception vessel). More recently, the number of points identified by acupuncturists has exploded. There are extra meridians (some of them outlined in ancient times, others modern) with their own sets of points, there are special points (off meridians), and there are complete mappings of body structures and functions by points along the outer ears, on the nose, in the scalp, on the hands, on the feet, and at the wrists and ankles. Despite the growing number of treatment zones, most acupuncturists still utilize the traditionally-identified points on the 14 main meridians. On each meridian there are a small number of points used repeatedly, because of their versatility, for a wide variety of patients and diseases. One such point on each major meridian is mentioned below, sometimes with a second point also briefly described, for a total of 21. It is important to recognize that although a list of disorders and diseases treated by each point can be given, sometimes the points are selected entirely or primarily on the basis of the Chinese theory of balancing the flow in the meridians, so that the point might be used for other kinds of disorders, aside from those listed, because of its usefulness in this balancing process. For points not on the central line of the body, each point has a left and right side reflected location (the point is counted only once for enumeration purposes). For each point in this presentation, the name of the meridian, the number of the point, the number of standard points on the meridian, its designation by one of the number-based classification systems (two letters and the point number), and the Chinese name are given.

Large Intestine Meridian, point #4 of 20: LI4, Hegu
This point is located on the back side of the hand between the thumb and first finger. The dominant uses are to relieve pain and to treat constipation or other bowel disorders. However, this point is also utilized in the treatment of inflammatory and feverish diseases which have symptoms in the throat and head, because the large intestine meridian runs from the hand to the face. Another key point on this meridian is LI11 (Quchi), located at the elbow. It is used for many upper body disorders, such as sore throat, eye pain, lymphatic swellings, rashes, and difficulty moving the arms, and for intestinal disorders, such as diarrhea and intestinal cramping.

Lung Meridian, point #7 of 11: LU7, Lieque
This point is located above the wrist on the inside of the arm. It is used to treat several disorders of the upper body, including headache, neck stiffness, cough, asthma, sore throat, facial paralysis, and wrist problems.

Stomach Meridian, point #36 of 45: ST36, Zusanli
This point is located on the front of the leg, just below the knee. It is helpful for digestive disorders, including nausea, vomiting, gastralgia, and abdominal distention, and also for general weakness. Recently, numerous clinical trials have been conducted with treatment of this point alone, demonstrating positive effects in treating anemia, immune deficiency, fatigue, and numerous diseases.

Spleen Meridian, point #6 of 21: SP6, Sanyinjiao
This point is located on the inner side of the leg just above the ankle. Although it is on the spleen meridian, which generally influences the digestive system, this point is also valuable for treating hormonal disorders (irregular menstruation, impotence) and immune disorders. Another key point on this meridian is SP9 (Yinlingquan), located just below the knee. It is used in the treatment of urinary diseases, especially with fluid retention, abdominal and back pain, and female reproductive system disorders.

Gallbladder Meridian, point #20 of 44: GB20, Fengchi
This point is located at the base of the skull where it joins the neck in back. It used in the treatment of acute disorders, such as common cold, influenza, headache, neck pain, and fever. In addition, it lowers blood pressure and relaxes tension in the area of the eyes. Another key point on this meridian is GB34 (Yanglingquan), located on the outer side of the knee, and used for treating a wide range of injuries and disorders of the muscles and tendons.
Liver Meridian, point #3 of 14: LV3, Taichong
The point is located on the top of the foot, between the first and second toes. It is used to balance emotional energy, to regulate menstruation, to reduce tension and pain in the chest, treat eye disorders, alleviate headaches, and reduce high blood pressure. The adjacent point in the meridian, LV2 (Xingjian), at the webbing between the toes, is also considered quite important and is frequently needled along with LV3; it has similar uses, but is also incorporated into the treatment of lower abdominal disorders, such as urinary problems.
Pericardium Meridian, point #6 of 9: PC6, Neiguan
This point is located on the inner arm, just above the wrist. Like other points on this meridian, it is useful for cardiac disorders, such as heart palpitation and angina pectoris. It is also useful for nausea, vomiting, spasms, and convulsions.

Heart Meridian, point #7 of 9: HT7, Shenmen
This point is located on the outer side of the wrist. It is used in the treatment of a variety of mental disorders, such as absent mindedness, insomnia, disturbing dreams, hysteria, depression, agitation, and mental illness. It is also used in the treatment of heart disease and fatigue.
Urinary Bladder Meridian, point #40 of 67: BL40, Weizhong
This point is located at the back of the knee. It is utilized in the treatment of back pain, hip impairment, muscular atrophy, leg pain and immobility, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and a host of other symptoms. Another important point on the bladder meridian is BL23 (Shenshu), in the lumbar area (hip level) near the spine; it is used in treatment of a wide range of disorders, including urinary problems, impotence, menstrual disorders, low back pain, knee weakness, dizziness, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, edema, asthma, and diarrhea. A large section of the bladder meridian is of importance because, as it flows along either side of the spine (in two parallel lines on each side), it associates with the internal organs in the vicinity.
Kidney Meridian, point #3 of 27: KI3, Taixi
This point is located just behind the inner ankle. It is used for disorders in several areas of the body, including sore throat and toothache, deafness and tinnitus, dizziness, asthma, thirst, insomnia, impotence, frequency urination, pain in the lower back, and menstrual irregularities.
Triple Burner Meridian, point #5 of 23: TB5, Waiguan
The triple burner is considered to be a special type of organ system that spans the entire torso. This point on the meridian is located on the outer side of the arm, above the wrist. It is mainly used in treatment of disorders along the pathway of this meridian, that is, of the fingers, hand, arms, neck, ears, cheek, and top of the head.
Small Intestine Meridian, point #3 of 19: SI3, Houxi
This point is located on the side of the hand, below the little finger. It is used for treating mental disorders, stiffness and pain in the neck, chest, and lumbar region, seizures, night sweats, and fevers.

Governing Vessel, point #20 of 28: GV20, Baihui
This point is located at the top of the head. It is traditionally applied in the treatment of various mental disorders, and for problems that occur in the head: headache, vertigo, ringing in the ears, nasal obstruction, difficulty with speech, etc. It is also used to treat prolapse, such as that of the rectum and uterus. Another key point on this meridian is GV14 (Dazhui), located just below the seventh cervical vertebrae (shoulder level); it is used for treating neck and upper back problems, feverish diseases, convulsions, cough, asthma, and common cold.

Conception Vessel, point #4 of 24: CV4, Guanyuan
This point is located a little below the navel. It is used for all types of lower abdominal disorders, including urination problems, hernia, menstrual disorders, gynecological infections, postpartum bleeding, diarrhea, rectal prolapse, etc. Another important point on this vessel is CV6 (Qihai), half way between CV4 and the navel. The applications are similar, but it is especially used in cases of accompanying fatigue.

Must look features of a Digital Camera

It is not a good idea to rush which camera to go for when you have too many players in the market. Even Canon and Nikon have failed with certain models they have come out with. Kodak on an overall has not been doing good in the digital world though the camera you are looking at is having pretty descent feedbacks.

Some stuffs to look for when looking at a digital camera.

1. What do you intend to shoot more.
2. Lens - Purple fringing and Vignetting are some factor you can look at. Since you are not looking for a DSLR you may need to look at whether the built in lens has got a thread in case you need to use a filter.
3. Shutter speed. High and low. If you intend to shoot without flash with manual settings keep an eye on the aperture and Noise level at ISO 400.
4. What is the size of your CCD or CMOS. – it makes a huge difference on sensitivity when you pack 7 million pixels into a smaller sized CCD.
5. Resolution and size LCD display - If your camera is having EVF then you may need to look at their details too.
6. Power source - would you go in for a proprietary lithium ion battery or the STD AAs.
7. Internal memory
8. External memory format
9. Optical ZOOM.
10. Image stabilization (Lens or CCD or both)
11. Image compression/file formats.

It would be good to go though http://www.dpreview.com/ to understand how you can choose a camera based on your requirement.

Tara Tiny @ Rs 99K is the world's cheapest car!

March 17, 2008
The Tata Nano is no longer the world's cheapest car! Jostling along with Tata Nano, this July, will be Tara Tiny and Tara Titu. These are zero emission, electric cars and cost only Rs 99,000! And they come from the Tara International stable.
Tara S Ganguly, the company's chairman and chief executive officer, had a big dream. And he set about realising it 'in a small way.' Tara International has teamed up with China's Aucma, a leading player in the electrical vehicles and appliances segment, to manufacture these cars.
At the moment, four variants of electric cars are ready at the Tara International factory at Palta, a few kilometers from Kolkata. These are Tara Tiny, Tara Titu (two-seater and four-seater, respectively), Tara Shuttle, and Tara Carrier. While Tara Tiny and Tara Titu are priced at Rs 99,000 (approximately), Tara Shuttle and Tara Carrier are priced at Rs 500,000 (approximately).
The company will also launch electric bikes priced between Rs 12,000 and Rs 35,000.

Travel to Goa! A quick read for a traveller.

Some good infomation from a friend from hyderabad.

Goa trip was one of the most memorable experiences and feel I should share it with folks for your benefit. A quick read about best places to visit in goa for a budget traveller.

- A bus from Hyderabad to panjim wasn't a bad journey at all.
- Reached panjim bus stand, had breakfast at Udipi café nearby. Service is real slow because of general rush, but food is good.
- Hired a bike from the stand besides panjim bus stand.
o The hiring rates differ from day to day based on the tourists rush and bikes. Rs. 300 for pulsar etc.
o 250/300 rs is 1 day charge you need to give the money in advance for the number of days u wish to keep the bike.
o Petrol charges to be paid by you. U also need to submit a scanned copy of driv lic. Make sure you get all the bike papers.
o Helmet is not needed for driving inside city, but is a must if you are planning to drive in highways.
- Went to assagao, and checked in Hotel Astoria. A really good value for money hotel. I paid 500rs per day. Hot water + amazing food. ,
Quite a few beaches/forts Anjuna, vagator, baga, calagunte etc are just a few mins drive from there.
- Anjuna beach is quite rocky and is not recommended for swimming. But yes there are quite a few roadside shops just before anjuna beach. And have some excellent
collection. ,
- Next day visited chapora fort. I believe few scenes of DCH were shot there. , ,
- Amazing view of the vagator/small vagator beaches. , , . You can take a less travelled route to vagator beaches by trekking down from fort top.
- Vagator is a very good beach and would recommend visiting there compared to baga which is usually very crowded. Had a ginormous breakfast for 70 rs in one of the shacks there.
- Enjoyed swimming and spending time in the beach. You can even get a surfboard for 100rs for an hour and have more fun. .
- In the evening went to the mapusa market (Friday). I dunno why the market is famous, I was not able to notice anything that stands out.
- Next day visited baga and calagunte beaches. Baga is a very commercial/crowded place. Lots of hotels are also besides baga. You also have various water sports activities there so is
good fun and timepass. I was lucky that the weather was absolutely brilliant and setting sun provided a wonderful photo op. , , ,
, . Parasailing+speedboat charges comes to around 500/600rs per person. Again depends on rush and bargaining. Had dinner at one of the shacks there.
Again a small note: Cards are not accepted in any of the shacks. So you have to carry cash or go to the nearest atm which is 5 mins drive from the beach.
- While returning back I would definitely recommend going to Ingo’s market. A must visit place. Very good place to shop some funky designer items and get a sense of international goan crowd.
- Next day visited Miramar beach , , Swimming is not allowed in this beach. But it’s a good watch.
- In all this hectic visiting – it suddenly dawned on me that the return tickets I have was a tatkal ticket from londa to hyd (booked 2 days b4 leaving J). Was absolutely clueless abt where
londa was and anyways returned the bike at panjim bus stand, took a local bus from there to some village near londa. , . A word of caution this route is not for the
faint hearted. Amazing views and dangerous roads. I saw two accidents happen just in front of me. An amazing 4.5 hr ride and am sure you will be so freaked out that u will be sitting at the
edge of ur seat on whole route. J Forget about catching a nap in that route. Reached the village forgot its name got a ride in a taxi jeep and reached londa station.
- Londa to hyd train journey was breeze. Travelling in a sleeper train after 2 years was a welcome change. It’s a different experience altogather. Costed just 500rs.

That’s it J. Hopefully people can benefit from this brief trip report. - what a wonderful place goa is !

virtual world space

Its been quite sometime I wanted to work on creating my own blog and finally I put my thoughts in action. I chose the name as I truly felt like creating a space in the virtual world for myself to connect to millions others like me who enjoy being amazed at the beauty of the Internet.

Publishing my first post on the blog and hopefully I would collate useful information and share some great stuff periodically.
